Nick DesLauriers

Boards of Directors

Nick is a medical student at the University of Minnesota. He lived on Mfangano Island for a year as a Doris Duke International Clinical Research Fellow in 2018-19, working with the Health Navigation program and as Student-PI of the MOMENTUM Study in partnership with the Ekialo Kiona Research Department.
Nick first travelled to Kenya during undergraduate to study international development in Nairobi, where he was inspired by his Kenyan professors’ commitment to equity and social justice, and the belief in a need for sustainable development to be driven by local voice and community.
He spent subsequent summers in Minneapolis and rural Uganda working with community health workers on programs to improve access to care and to healthy living. Nick joined the OHR Board of Directors in Winter 2019 and is excited to continue to work with Ekialo Kiona and the Mfangano community to support locally-driven initiatives to improve health and wellbeing.
In his free time he likes to run, kayak, travel, and provide some humor to his Mfangano host family through his rocky path toward mastering the elusive art of chapati cooking.
