Agriculture on Mfangano
MISSION:
Encourage farmers to produce food in a way that is nourishing for people, and respectful of land, water, air and wildlife. Through education, demonstration, and communication we promote a traditional, diversified, and balanced philosophy towards chosen crops and techniques.
BACKGROUND:
OHR first put down roots at the local WWOOF farm (World-wide Workers on Organic Farms) where visions developed as fruits were eaten and new seeds dropped. Many of these seeds sprouted from beneath this fertile soil and have grown into the many programs that impact Mfangano today. Without a doubt, OHR would not be what it is today had it not been for this farm.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
Since then, the farm has matured into an entire agriculture department. We’ve focused on creating a space for community members to learn and gain experience through drop-ins, workshops and seminars. This all takes place at the newly titled WWOOF farm, now known as the Ekialo Kiona Demonstration Farm. On this same piece of land, we are demonstrating that farming can be a viable, engaging, professional occupation; one that can be successful and rewarding. These farmers reach out to youth while also collaborating with relating departments through our Sustainable Nutrition and Forestry Education Program. This program brings youth and community members together to discuss these inter-related topics and further disseminating these discussions through the Suba Youth Radio.
