December 12th:
Independence DAY
On December 12th, Kenya will celebrate 48 years of Independence from colonial rule. Yet while the Lake Victoria Nile Perch fishing industry exports millions of tons of perch fillet abroad, these remote communities experience some of the highest levels of malnutrition in East Africa. Help us Get to Zero malnutrition. Help usGet to $5,000.
GET THE FACTS:
- Fish contribute up to 90% of dietary protein for these communities.
- Fish stock has plummeted in recent years due to overfishing. The invasive, cannibalistic Nile Perch has compromised the lake's natural ecosystem, destroying over 200 native species of fish.
- With the Nile Perch boom of the 1980s came thousands of migrant fishermen, and an explosion of HIV/AIDS.
- Women are often left home, solely responsible for feeding family, and become vulnerable to risky "Fish-for-sex" practices.
- On Mfangano, 75% of households and 100% of HIV/AIDS patients are food insecure.
